12. Citizens Bank

2023 2nd Avenue North, Bessemer, AL 35020

Built by businessman Jeff Clay in 1899 as a financial institution, this building serves as an excellent example of the simplistic design of many early 19th century buildings.

Hello, I am a great-great granddaughter of businessman Jeff Clay of Bessemer, AL, whose name appears on the historical Citizens Bank, 2023 2nd Avenue North, Bessemer, Alabama. (Exact inscription reads Jeff Clay & Sons.) Sadly, I never knew my great-great grandfather, but knew and loved my great grandmother Pearl very well, youngest daughter of Jeff and Catherine Clay, until the time of her death in 1968 or 1969. I have family photographs of Jeff's family as well as a photo of his massive Victorian home, Four Oaks, in Bessemer. Years ago, my grandmother and I visited The Bessemer Museum of History in the old Train Depot with my elderly grandmother. While there, we saw photographs of Jeff and his sons in downtown Bessemer and read newspaper articles about him and his home. Currently, I'm 63 years old. I'm interested in any historical information or pics you may have about Jeff Clay. You may notify me. Thank you!!
