The lower postcard (ca. 1908) shows the original 1890 city hall. The building also housed the fire department. Fire wagons were housed inside the arched doors on the left face of the building (18th Street side).
The City of Bessemer invites you to tour our Downtown Bessemer National Historic District. The buildings you will see date back to the boom of the steel industry in central Alabama and represent a period of fast development in this Marvel City. On this site you will find descriptions of these historic structures. The numbers located by the descriptions correspond to the numbers located on the map on the "Downtown Walking Tour Guide" brochure.
